US Citizen’s India Journey Raises Questions After Arrest Near Nepal Border Without Passport

Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh: The mysterious journey of a 36-year-old US national, who was arrested near the India-Nepal border without valid travel documents, has left investigators trying to piece together his movements across India.
The man, identified as Jordan Brown, a California resident, was detained on July 11 during a joint operation by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Sonauli police after he allegedly attempted to enter Nepal through an unauthorised route in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district.
According to officials, Brown told investigators that he had travelled to India from Bali and spent nearly six weeks in Goa before heading towards the Sonauli border area. He reportedly claimed that he was planning to meet a Nepali national he had met during his stay in Goa before crossing into Nepal.
However, investigators said Brown could not provide complete details about the person he claimed to know, including his full name, address or contact information. He also allegedly stated that his passport was with an acquaintance in Bengaluru, Karnataka, but failed to share the person’s complete details.
Officials are now examining Brown’s travel history, digital records and the people he may have interacted with during his stay in India to understand the purpose of his visit and his movements.
Authorities are also looking into reports that a Chinese passport was found among his belongings. Brown’s claims of having served in the US Navy and Special Forces are also being verified independently. Officials have said that no suspicious links have been confirmed so far, apart from the alleged violation of immigration rules.
According to investigators, Brown entered India around eight weeks ago after arriving from Bali. After spending most of his time in Goa, he travelled to Sonauli, a major transit point connecting India and Nepal.
He was reportedly intercepted near border pillar number 516 while allegedly trying to cross into Nepal without proper documents. Officials said he attempted to escape when questioned but was caught after a short chase.
Following questioning by the SSB, Brown was handed over to Sonauli police, who registered a case under relevant sections of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. A local court later sent him to judicial custody.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the complete details of his journey, the status of his missing passport and the reason behind his attempt to cross the border illegally.
