Massive Fire at Surat Textile Market Damages Over a Dozen Shops, Firefighter Injured
Surat: Panic spread through a busy textile market in Gujarat’s Surat after a massive fire broke out around midnight, damaging more than a dozen shops and leaving a firefighter injured.
The blaze erupted at the Shyam Sangini textile market and quickly spread across shops on the building’s sixth floor, officials said.
Given the size of the fire and the multi-storey structure, emergency teams mounted a major firefighting operation. Around 25 fire vehicles, along with turntable ladders and hydraulic platforms, were deployed to tackle the flames.
Nearly 150 firefighters and officers were involved in the operation, Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek said.
Fire Brought Under Control After Hours
Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly seven to eight hours before finally bringing it under control.
One firefighter was injured while working to contain the fire. His condition reportedly deteriorated during the operation, after which he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Local traders said the blaze caused extensive damage to synthetic goods stored outside shops on the sixth floor. The fire reportedly spread rapidly from these materials to several nearby establishments.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges of fighting fires in densely packed commercial markets, where combustible materials and limited access can make emergency operations particularly difficult.
Officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine what caused the fire. The exact reason behind the blaze was not immediately known.
