Tourist Guide Dies After Knife Attack Outside Jaipur’s Amer Fort; Protests Erupt
Jaipur: A tourist guide was killed after being stabbed outside the historic Amer Fort in Jaipur, triggering protests and a shutdown in parts of the Amer area.
Manish Soni, who was critically injured in the attack following an altercation near Maota Lake, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Sawai Man Singh Hospital on Tuesday. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Azam, a jeep driver.
With Soni’s death, police have now converted the case from an assault to a murder investigation.
Attack Captured On CCTV
According to police, the incident took place directly in front of Amer Fort. CCTV footage reportedly shows Soni, dressed in orange, being approached by the accused, who allegedly ran towards him and attacked him with a knife.
Soni was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but could not be saved. Officials said he died due to excessive blood loss.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Alok Gautam said the accused was in custody and that investigators had gathered evidence related to the attack.
“We have the accused in custody. We have evidence against him,” Gautam said.
Protests Bring Amer To A Standstill
Soni’s death sparked anger among local residents and traders. Shops in Amer were shut, while elephant rides and tourist activities at the fort were suspended.
Protesters also blocked the main road leading to Amer Fort, demanding action against those responsible. Schools in the area were reportedly closed as a precautionary measure.
A heavy police presence has been deployed in the area as authorities continue to monitor the situation and appeal to residents to maintain peace.
Family Seeks Compensation, Government Job
Soni’s family has submitted a memorandum to the administration outlining several demands. These include ₹1 crore in compensation, a government job for a dependent family member and allocation of a dairy booth.
The family has also sought strict action against vehicles allegedly being operated illegally or without proper authorisation in the Amer area, along with continued police action against people with criminal backgrounds.
Protesters and family members have additionally demanded “bulldozer action” against the accused’s house.
Responding to the demands, ACP Alok Gautam said the government was in discussions with the family to address their concerns.
Sole Breadwinner For His Family
For Soni’s family, the tragedy has brought an even deeper sense of loss. Family members said he was the sole earning member of the household.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
As tensions remain high in Amer, police have urged residents to remain calm while the investigation into the killing continues.
