Swiss Company Builds Luxury Bunkers For Billionaires To Store Gold, Cars And Wine
Switzerland: For the world’s ultra-rich, the ultimate luxury may soon be having a private underground bunker hidden deep inside the Swiss Alps.
A Swiss company is developing a network of highly secure underground vaults designed for wealthy clients who want to protect their most valuable possessions from theft, geopolitical instability and other potential threats.
The project, called Brünig Mega Safe, is being developed beneath the Brünig massif near the village of Lungern. According to reports, the facility will eventually feature around 20 to 24 private underground caverns, each located more than 100 metres beneath solid rock.
The price of entry is steep. The private vaults will reportedly be offered on 99-year leases starting at around 500,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to roughly ₹5.8 crore. Larger spaces could cost close to 1 million Swiss francs.
From Gold To Ferraris
These aren’t ordinary storage units. Clients will reportedly be able to use the massive underground spaces to store gold, artwork, vintage cars, luxury goods and even expensive wine collections.
The natural temperature underground is expected to remain around 13°C, creating suitable conditions for temperature-sensitive valuables such as wine and artwork.
Some parts of the complex are also expected to include modular living spaces, meaning the facility could potentially serve as a private underground retreat in the event of a major crisis.
Security At The Core
Security is one of the project’s biggest selling points. Visitors will reportedly have to pass through a guarded entrance and multiple security checks before reaching the underground vaults.
Clients will also be able to drive vehicles through a tunnel directly to their private storage areas.
Project developer Thomas Gasser said the security concept would be comparable to systems used by the Swiss National Bank, although specific security measures will not be publicly disclosed.
An Unusual Past
The location itself has an interesting history. The underground complex previously housed Cantina Caverna, a restaurant and events venue, along with a shooting range and a firefighter training facility.
The development has received a mixed response from residents of Lungern. Some have questioned whether such an elaborate facility for wealthy clients is necessary, while others see it as an opportunity for investment and jobs. Some locals have even joked about having owners of luxury cars as their future underground neighbours.
Switzerland already has a long history of using its mountains and underground structures for protection. Former military bunkers across the country have been repurposed for everything from storage facilities to data centres.
