Indian-Origin Truck Driver Sentenced to Nearly 5 Years in US Prison After Fatal Eight-Vehicle Crash

Washington: A 22-year-old Indian-origin truck driver has been sentenced to four years and eight months in a California state prison after a devastating eight-vehicle crash that killed three people and injured four others on a freeway in San Bernardino County.
Jashanpreet Singh, who was 21 at the time of the October 2025 crash, pleaded guilty in June to three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. The collision occurred after Singh failed to slow down despite traffic coming to a halt ahead.
Dashcam footage from Singh’s Freightliner tractor-trailer captured the horrifying moments leading up to the crash. The video shows the truck travelling at high speed before slamming into a white SUV and triggering a chain-reaction collision involving several vehicles, including another truck. The semi-truck eventually crossed multiple lanes before crashing into a disabled truck parked on the freeway’s shoulder.
According to the California Highway Patrol, traffic had slowed significantly before the accident, but Singh did not apply the brakes, resulting in the fatal pile-up.
Eyewitness Jason Calmelat described the impact as sounding “like a big explosion.” Speaking to NBC Los Angeles, he said the truck never appeared to brake or swerve before crashing into the line of vehicles. He also recalled seeing the truck catch fire, with the driver escaping moments later.
Authorities have identified Singh as an undocumented immigrant who entered the United States through the southern border in 2022, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Following the crash, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer against him. He is expected to face deportation proceedings after completing his prison sentence.
