IIT Graduate Among 15 Arrested in Telangana for Online Child Exploitation

In a sweeping operation across Telangana, the state’s Cyber Security Bureau has arrested 15 individuals accused of online child sexual exploitation. Among those detained is an IIT graduate employed with a prominent software firm, highlighting the alarming reach of this crime even among the educated and professionally employed.
The arrests stem from a day-long coordinated crackdown in multiple districts including Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Jagtiyal, Yadagirigutta, and Jagadgirigutta. The suspects, all men aged between 19 and 50 from middle-income backgrounds, have been linked to 57 cyber tipline complaints involving the circulation of explicit material featuring children aged 6 to 14.
Shikha Goel, Director of the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau, told NDTV that the arrests were part of intensified efforts by the newly formed Child Protection Unit. “In just four months, 294 FIRs have been filed and 110 arrests made. This is a significant jump compared to just 37 FIRs and 34 arrests over the previous two years,” she said.
The accused were found to be storing, uploading, and distributing child sexual abuse material, often within closed online groups. Investigations are underway to determine whether the suspects are part of a larger, organized network and to trace the origins of the content—initial findings suggest the victims may not be from India.
“Technology has helped us trace these offenders through cyber tipline reports,” Goel explained. “However, identifying the victims remains challenging.”
In a previous operation, the unit successfully rescued a young girl, showcasing the potential of tech-enabled enforcement. Goel emphasized that simply browsing or possessing such material is a punishable offence and urged the public to be aware of the legal consequences.
She also called for stronger accountability from social media platforms and digital intermediaries, stressing the need for both institutional responsibility and personal awareness.
“Our Child Protection Units monitor the dark web and social media around the clock. We are watching closely and will act against anyone involved in the creation, circulation, or consumption of such content,” she warned.
