Bihar YouTuber Claims E20 Fuel Damaged Toyota Innova Hycross, Toyota Attributes Issue to Contaminated Petrol

New Delhi: A Bihar-based YouTuber has sparked fresh debate over the use of E20 petrol after alleging that his Toyota Innova Hycross developed serious mechanical issues due to the fuel. However, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has rejected the claim, saying its investigation found the problem was caused by contaminated fuel and not by E20 petrol itself.
The controversy surfaced after YouTuber Manish Kashyap shared two videos from a Toyota service centre, where his hybrid Innova Hycross was undergoing inspection. In the videos, Kashyap claimed that his vehicle, which had covered around 12,000 kilometres, began experiencing engine vibrations, knocking sounds and other symptoms resembling a breakdown shortly after he started using E20 petrol.
According to Kashyap, technicians collected fuel samples from different parts of the vehicle’s fuel system during the inspection. He alleged that the samples showed signs of abnormal ethanol content and visible contamination. In one of the videos, he also displayed the removed fuel tank, fuel pump and filter assembly, comparing multiple fuel samples and questioning how contaminated fuel could have entered the system.
Apart from raising concerns about fuel quality, Kashyap also expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding his vehicle’s warranty. He said he had purchased an extended warranty covering up to 2 lakh kilometres, but was informed that warranty coverage might not apply if the damage was classified as being caused by contaminated fuel.
The YouTuber argued that the situation was unfair to customers, pointing out that the fuel filler cap of the Innova Hycross clearly states that the vehicle is compatible with “Up to E20 Petrol.” He questioned why owners should be asked to bear repair or cleaning costs if they are using fuel that falls within the manufacturer’s recommended specifications.
Kashyap also highlighted that he had chosen the hybrid version of the Innova Hycross by paying approximately ₹5 lakh more than the standard variant, believing it to be a more environmentally responsible choice. He said the ongoing concerns surrounding E20 petrol had left him disappointed and worried about the future of vehicles designed to run on ethanol-blended fuel.
Responding to the allegations, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) clarified that the Innova Hycross is fully designed, tested and certified for compatibility with E20 petrol. The company stated that its technical inspection found no evidence linking the vehicle’s problems to ethanol-blended fuel.
According to Toyota, engineers concluded that the issue resulted solely from non-standard and contaminated fuel. As part of the repair process, the service team drained the contaminated fuel from the tank and fuel lines, cleaned the entire fuel system, refilled the vehicle with standard E20 petrol and conducted further testing.
Toyota said that after these procedures, the vehicle functioned normally and was returned to the customer. The company maintained that the incident was not related to E20 fuel usage, reiterating that the Hycross is engineered to operate safely on E20 petrol as per industry standards.
The incident comes amid ongoing discussions around India’s Ethanol Blending Programme. While the government continues to promote E20 petrol as a cleaner alternative aimed at reducing crude oil imports and lowering emissions, some motorists have raised concerns over mileage, fuel quality and vehicle performance.
The Centre has consistently maintained that there is no scientific evidence of widespread engine damage or vehicle failures caused by E20 fuel. Officials have also stressed that ethanol-blended petrol has undergone extensive testing in collaboration with automobile manufacturers, oil marketing companies and technical experts before being introduced across the country.
Although Kashyap’s experience has generated widespread attention on social media, Toyota’s findings suggest that fuel contamination—not E20 petrol itself—was responsible for the vehicle’s temporary malfunction. The incident nevertheless highlights the importance of maintaining fuel quality throughout the supply chain and ensuring consumer confidence as India expands the use of ethanol-blended fuels.
