Bengaluru Woman Allegedly Kidnapped and Assaulted Over Loan Dispute, Three Arrested

Bengaluru: A dispute over an unpaid loan has turned into a serious criminal investigation in Bengaluru after a 30-year-old woman alleged that she was kidnapped, assaulted, threatened and held captive for nearly two days over demands for money.

According to the police, the woman was allegedly forced into a compromising situation and filmed on a mobile phone, with the accused threatening to circulate the recording if she failed to repay the money. She also alleged that she was forced to sign documents during the ordeal.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the case, including two women. The accused have been identified as Reshma Banu, Suhail and Nazath. Police said efforts are continuing to trace other suspects named in the complaint.

The incident reportedly took place between August 27 and August 31 and falls under the jurisdiction of the Chandra Layout police station in Bengaluru.

Loan dispute allegedly escalated into violence

The case reportedly began with a financial dispute involving two separate loans.

According to the woman’s complaint, she had borrowed ₹50,000 from Nazath under a weekly repayment arrangement. She had also allegedly borrowed another ₹1 lakh from Reshma Banu around two years ago.

The woman told police that worsening financial difficulties had made it difficult for her to keep up with the repayments. What began as a dispute over the alleged outstanding amount, however, allegedly escalated into threats, violence and unlawful confinement.

Police said the woman was allegedly summoned to Nazath’s house on August 27 on the pretext of some work. Once she arrived, the situation allegedly changed.

The complaint states that Reshma Banu, her husband Suhail and two other people entered the house in Metro Layout. The woman alleged that she was assaulted using a knife and by hand, while her mobile phone was also damaged.

She further alleged that she and her young son were forcibly taken away in an autorickshaw and transported towards Kumbalgodu.

Woman alleges she was confined and threatened

According to the FIR, the woman was allegedly taken to a room and kept there against her will. She claimed that she was beaten with a stick and repeatedly threatened over an alleged debt that had reportedly risen to around ₹11 lakh, including interest.

The woman also alleged that the accused used intimidation to pressure her into making payments and complying with their demands.

One of the most serious allegations in the case concerns an alleged video recording. The complainant told police that she was forced to partially undress and was filmed on a mobile phone.

She alleged that the accused threatened to share the video with others if she did not repay the money.

The threat of releasing such a recording, if established, could add another serious dimension to the criminal investigation, particularly given the alleged use of the video as a means of intimidation.

Forced to sign documents, complaint says

The woman further alleged that her ordeal did not end at the place where she was being confined.

According to the complaint, she was taken to a lawyer near a market and was allegedly made to sign certain documents. She was subsequently taken back to the Kumbalgodu area.

The circumstances surrounding the documents and why the woman was allegedly forced to sign them are now part of the police investigation.

Woman managed to alert police

The woman’s eventual escape from the situation reportedly came after she found an opportunity to secretly alert the authorities.

According to the FIR, she told the accused that she needed to use the toilet and used the opportunity to alert police.

Police subsequently reached the location, rescued the woman and brought her to Chandra Layout Police Station, where her complaint was recorded.

Her allegations led to the registration of a case against Nazath, Reshma Banu, Suhail, Saif and others.

Three arrested, others being traced

Following the registration of the case and subsequent investigation, police arrested three people, including Reshma Banu and Nazath.

Suhail, who has also been named as an accused, was arrested along with the two women, police said.

Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the remaining suspects who are currently reported to be absconding.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping, assault, confinement, threats, video recording and the documents the woman was allegedly forced to sign.

Police may also examine available digital evidence, including mobile phones and other material, as part of the investigation.

Investigation continues

The case has drawn attention because what was initially described as a financial dispute allegedly escalated into a much more serious incident involving violence, confinement and threats.

Police are now working to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the role played by each of the accused.

The allegations made by the woman will be tested through the investigation, statements of witnesses and available evidence. The accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in accordance with law.

For the complainant, however, the immediate priority was getting out of the alleged confinement safely. Her account has now prompted police action, with three arrests already made and efforts continuing to trace the other people named in the case.

The investigation remains underway.
