Tamil Nadu Assembly Opens With Big Promises as Governor Arlekar Backs TVK’s Roadmap, DMK Walks Out in Protest

Tamil Nadu June , 18 :The first session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay began on Thursday with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivering his maiden address, laying out the new TVK government’s vision for the state.
Calling it a “new chapter” in Tamil Nadu politics, the Governor praised the coalition-led government for what he described as a historic power-sharing model, something rarely seen in the state’s political history. He said the government had overcome several hurdles, including “money power,” to secure the people’s mandate.
The address highlighted several major announcements. In a big relief for farmers, the government announced a complete waiver of cooperative crop loans up to ₹75,000 and a partial waiver of ₹35,000 for larger loans, benefiting over 14 lakh farmers at a cost of nearly ₹6,000 crore.
On environmental concerns, the Governor said the government would take strong steps against climate change by expanding forest cover, protecting mangroves, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems. He also assured firm action against Kerala’s proposed new dam plans and promised repair work in the Mullai Periyar region.
The TVK government reaffirmed its commitment to the two-language policy and said women’s welfare, child development, and state rights would remain top priorities. The Governor also claimed that 717 TASMAC outlets have been shut since the government took charge, calling it a step toward social reform.
Financially, the government accused the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime of mismanagement and released a white paper to highlight the state’s economic challenges. It also announced plans to pass a resolution demanding Tamil Nadu’s fair share of tax devolution from the Union government and to form a legal committee to fight for it.
Meanwhile, tensions flared outside and inside the Assembly as Udhayanidhi Stalin led DMK legislators in protest over worsening law-and-order issues. The party later staged a walkout, demanding answers from the Chief Minister.
The session marks the first major political test for the new TVK government, with expectations high over how it plans to deliver on its promises while managing political opposition.
