DMK vs Rahul Gandhi: Alliance Cracks Deepen As War Of Words Intensifies

Chennai , June 16 : A major political rift has surfaced between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with the DMK openly accusing him of weakening opposition unity and acting with “political immaturity.”
The attack came through both the party’s IT wing and its official mouthpiece Murasoli, marking one of the strongest public criticisms Rahul Gandhi has faced from a former ally.
The sharp remarks follow a dramatic political shift in Tamil Nadu, where the Congress, after contesting and winning five Assembly seats as part of the DMK-led alliance in the 2026 Assembly elections, later broke away and joined actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK-led government.
This move has left the DMK politically isolated and deeply angered.
In a strongly worded social media post, the DMK IT wing accused Congress of abandoning the alliance after being politically supported by the DMK during difficult times. The post mocked Rahul Gandhi, calling him “a massive joke” and questioning the Congress party’s loyalty.
At the same time, Murasoli published an editorial accusing Rahul Gandhi of preaching opposition unity while allegedly creating divisions within the INDIA bloc.
The editorial pointed out several instances where Congress and Rahul Gandhi have reportedly clashed with alliance partners across states. It highlighted his criticism of Pinarayi Vijayan during election campaigns in Kerala, where Rahul had demanded action against the Chief Minister, triggering anger from Left parties.
According to the DMK, such actions have weakened trust among opposition allies and made it harder for the INDIA alliance to stay united against the BJP.
The tensions have grown beyond Tamil Nadu. The DMK recently boycotted an INDIA bloc meeting called by Congress, signaling growing discomfort in the alliance, though the party said it would continue supporting broader opposition issues.
The editorial also claimed that Congress has repeatedly worked against regional parties that were better placed to challenge the BJP in several states, accusing the party of prioritising its own interests over alliance unity.
Drawing a direct parallel to Tamil Nadu, the DMK accused Congress of betraying the alliance by joining the TVK government after contesting elections under the DMK banner. It alleged that the decision was approved by Congress’s central leadership.
The political battle has now exposed deeper fractures within the INDIA bloc, raising fresh questions about opposition unity ahead of future national challenges.
While Congress has not officially responded to the editorial, party insiders have defended the move, saying it respected the people’s mandate in Tamil Nadu.
With both sides exchanging sharp words, what was once a strong alliance now appears to be heading toward a full-scale political fallout.
