Mumbai News: BMC Debunks Fake Claims About July 8 School Holiday and Work From Home Order

Maharshtra : Amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai and growing concerns over weather conditions, a message claiming that schools would remain closed and private offices would be allowed to operate from home on Wednesday, July 8, started circulating widely on social media.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now dismissed these claims, calling them completely false and misleading. The civic body clarified that it has not issued any order announcing a holiday for schools or permitting work-from-home arrangements for private sector employees.

In an official statement shared on social media platform X, BMC said that messages suggesting schools in Mumbai would remain closed and private offices had been allowed to function remotely were fake. The corporation also appealed to citizens to verify information through official sources before sharing such messages further.

BMC Appeals Citizens to Follow Official Updates

The civic body urged residents to rely only on updates shared through BMC’s official social media handles and other verified communication channels. It also advised people to contact the BMC helpline number 1916 for accurate information related to weather conditions, civic services and emergency situations.

The clarification came after Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall over several days, affecting normal life in several parts of the city. Waterlogging, traffic disruptions and delays in public transport had raised concerns among residents, leading to confusion about possible school closures and office advisories.

Schools Were Closed Earlier Due to Heavy Rain

Earlier, on Tuesday, July 7, BMC had announced a holiday for schools and colleges in Mumbai after intense rainfall disrupted daily activities. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

However, with rainfall reducing and weather conditions improving, authorities did not announce any fresh citywide holiday for Wednesday, July 8.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also downgraded Mumbai’s weather warning from an orange alert to a yellow alert, indicating that the situation had improved compared to previous days.

Public Transport Services Return Towards Normal

As rainfall intensity reduced, Mumbai’s public transport services, including suburban railway operations, gradually returned to normal. The city had faced disruptions due to heavy showers, affecting commuters across several areas.

Despite improvement in weather conditions, authorities continued to monitor the situation and advised residents to remain alert during the monsoon season.

Palghar Announces School Holiday

While Mumbai did not receive any new school holiday announcement for July 8, neighbouring Palghar district declared a holiday for schools and colleges due to prevailing weather conditions.

Officials continue to monitor rainfall patterns across Maharashtra and may issue further advisories if weather conditions worsen.

Citizens Advised Not to Believe Fake Social Media Posts

BMC once again warned people against spreading unverified information during emergencies. The civic body said that fake messages can create unnecessary panic and confusion among residents.

People have been advised to check official announcements before making decisions regarding school attendance, office work arrangements or travel plans.
