Major Drug Bust in Assam: 10 Suspected Traffickers Arrested in Dibrugarh Crackdown

Dibrugarh, June 15:
In one of the biggest anti-drug operations in recent times, Assam Police arrested 10 suspected drug traffickers in a major crackdown in Dibrugarh and seized a large quantity of contraband along with cash, vehicles, and valuables believed to be linked to the illegal trade.
According to Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, the operation was carried out on Sunday in the Harijan Colony area near the Dibrugarh Town railway station after police received specific intelligence about an organised drug network operating in the locality.
Acting on the tip-off, multiple police teams launched coordinated raids across abandoned railway colony quarters and several nearby locations. Officials said the raids were aimed at dismantling a drug syndicate that had allegedly been running its operations from the heart of the town for a long time.
During the operation, police seized 79.55 grams of suspected heroin, hidden in eight separate containers. Alongside the narcotics, officers recovered a mobile phone and SIM card, which are now being examined for possible links to the wider network.
Investigators also found a large number of syringes believed to have been used for drug consumption and distribution. These included 240 insulin syringes packed in 40 bundles and another 60 high-tech syringes, highlighting the scale of the operation and the seriousness of the trafficking network.
Police also seized ₹4.92 lakh in cash, which officials suspect to be proceeds from the illegal drug trade. In addition, four vehicles believed to have been used in trafficking activities were confiscated.
What made the seizure more significant was the recovery of jewellery and valuables, which police believe may have been purchased using money earned through narcotics sales. These included gold earrings, a gold chain, a gold ring, and a silver coin.
Officials said the arrested individuals are currently being interrogated, and more names have surfaced during questioning. Police are now trying to track down other members of the network, including the alleged kingpin, who reportedly managed to escape during the operation and remains on the run.
Investigators are now focusing on tracing the source of the heroin, identifying the financial transactions involved, and mapping the broader supply chain linked to the syndicate.
The police described the operation as one of the most significant anti-drug crackdowns in Dibrugarh in recent years. Authorities believe the syndicate had been operating from abandoned railway quarters for a prolonged period, taking advantage of weak monitoring in the area.
To prevent such activities in the future, the police have also written to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) in Tinsukia, seeking eviction of illegal occupants living on railway land.
Officials say the investigation is far from over, and further arrests and seizures are expected as the crackdown intensifies. The case once again highlights the growing challenge of drug trafficking in Assam and the urgent need for stronger enforcement to curb the menace.
