IT Employees Urge Mandatory Work From Home After PM Modi’s Fuel-Saving Appeal

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to conserve fuel and work from home, IT employees across India are now demanding official action.
The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has written to the Union Labour Ministry, asking for a temporary mandatory work-from-home policy for IT and IT-enabled services employees in the national interest.
The demand comes after PM Modi, while speaking in Hyderabad, urged people to reduce fuel use, avoid unnecessary travel, attend meetings online, and work from home. These suggestions were aimed at protecting India’s economy from the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict and rising global oil prices.
NITES President Harpreet Singh Saluja said that reducing daily commuting by lakhs of IT workers would help save fuel, cut traffic congestion, lower pollution, and improve employee well-being while keeping business operations running smoothly.
The union also reminded the government that during the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s IT industry successfully shifted to remote work. Companies invested in cloud systems, cybersecurity, and digital collaboration tools, proving that large-scale work from home is practical and sustainable.
With hybrid work already becoming common, the latest demand has reopened the debate on whether remote working should once again become a national strategy during economic uncertainty.
