Hantavirus Outbreak on Ship: US Passenger Begins Long Quarantine After Deadly Cruise Illness

Omaha, US: What began as a dream voyage across the South Atlantic has turned into weeks of isolation for Jake Rosmarin, one of several passengers now under medical observation following a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius.
Jake, a 30-year-old photographer and content creator from Boston, had excitedly shared online that the ship would be his home for 35 days during the adventure. But after multiple passengers fell ill and three people died, the journey took a shocking turn.
He is now spending quarantine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where 14 other American passengers are also being monitored. Two more are under observation at Emory University Hospital.
Health officials say the risk to the general public remains very low, and the quarantine is being carried out as a precautionary step.
Despite the circumstances, Jake says he is trying to stay positive. His quarantine room includes a bed, TV, bathroom, refrigerator, exercise bike, and other comforts. He joked online after receiving a special iced drink from nurses, saying it was exactly what he needed.
The virus linked to the outbreak is believed to be the Andes strain of hantavirus, a rare version that may spread between people in uncommon cases. Hantavirus is usually linked to rodent droppings and contaminated environments.
A total of 11 people aboard the vessel became sick, with at least nine confirmed infections. Authorities believe a Dutch couple who died may have been among the first exposed while traveling in South America.
Passengers from the ship were flown to more than 20 countries after disembarking and placed into quarantine programs.
Jake said life on the ship became tense once people started getting sick. Travelers were asked to remain mostly inside cabins, wear masks, and maintain distance from others.
Before the outbreak, the expedition had included stops at remote islands, where passengers saw king penguins, elephant seals, albatrosses, and stunning wildlife.
Now, instead of returning home to Boston, Jake is counting the days until he can reunite with his fiancé, with whom he plans to marry next year. He admitted the situation has been frightening, but he is taking things one day at a time.
