Delhi to Shine Brighter This Diwali: ₹473 Crore Smart LED Upgrade to Light Up Roads Across City

Delhi is set to get a major festive upgrade this Diwali as the government prepares to roll out a massive ₹473 crore smart street lighting project aimed at making roads brighter, safer, and more energy-efficient.
The initiative, approved by the Expenditure Finance Committee in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, focuses on replacing outdated street lighting across the capital with modern smart LED systems.
Under the plan, nearly 96,000 street lights on PWD roads will be upgraded in phases. Officials say the goal is to remove dark stretches across the city and ensure better visibility on major roads and lanes ahead of the festive season.
At present, Delhi’s lighting network includes around 45,000 old High Pressure Sodium Vapour (HPSV) lights and about 51,000 older LED-based systems installed across more than 51,000 poles. These will now be replaced with advanced smart lighting technology.
The government aims to complete the project before Diwali, so residents can experience well-lit streets during one of the city’s busiest and most festive times of the year.
The move is also expected to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs while enhancing safety in public spaces across Delhi.
