New Delhi : A social media dispute over actor Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement has taken a political turn, with Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi stepping in to support the actor.
The controversy began after BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut criticised Sanon’s outfit in a jewellery advertisement for GIVA. Ranaut questioned the choice of attire for a campaign linked to the traditional festival and called the advertisement “intentionally creepy.”
Sanon responded without directly naming Ranaut, saying that festivals are about emotions and traditions rather than the clothes a person wears. She also questioned why women continue to be judged for their clothing.
Rahul Gandhi later shared Sanon’s response on his Instagram Story. He wrote that a woman should have the freedom to decide what she wears, what she does and where she goes. He also urged people to stop trolling women for exercising that freedom and used the hashtag #SmashThePatriarchy.
Sanon, in her response, said that culture and tradition are reflected in a person’s values and emotions, not simply in their clothes. She explained that Raksha Bandhan represents love, protection and family, adding that she and her sister celebrate the bond by tying rakhi to each other.
The advertisement also attracted attention because of a scene involving Sanon tying a rakhi to a dog after it barks at her. Some social media users questioned whether the styling and concept were appropriate for a traditional festival.
Sanon’s sister, Nupur Sanon, also joined the conversation, asking people to respect women’s choices rather than focusing on their clothing.
The dispute has since moved beyond Bollywood and social media, with Rahul Gandhi’s intervention bringing a political dimension to what initially began as a debate over a festive advertisement and women’s choice of clothing.
