Mumbai Landslide Leaves 5 Dead, Rescue Teams Search for Survivors
Mumbai: A landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla area early Wednesday morning claimed five lives, while several others are feared trapped under the debris.
The incident took place around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical, after a portion of a hillside collapsed following heavy rain. The debris reportedly fell onto two to three houses, trapping people inside.
Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working at the site. Specialised victim-detection cameras are being used to search through the rubble for signs of life.
Officials initially said that two people had died and around six to eight people could be trapped. As the rescue operation continued, the reported death toll rose to five, while four to five people were still feared trapped.
Two injured people, identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, were taken to hospital. Sohel suffered a head injury, while Mohamad sustained a back injury. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakne visited the affected area to assess the situation. Tawde also announced financial assistance of ₹3 lakh for the families of those who died. The aid will be provided through the District Collector’s Office.
Authorities are continuing the rescue operation, with teams carefully clearing the debris in the hope of finding anyone who may still be alive.
