Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Faces Legal Action Over Social Media Posts Targeting Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and Family

In Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has come under legal scrutiny after police registered a case against him for allegedly making offensive remarks on social media about Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and daughter-in-law Brahmini. This action was taken following a complaint filed by Ramalingam, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Mandal Parishad Secretary, at the Maddipadu Police Station.
The complaint stems from Varma’s social media comments made last year, during Naidu’s tenure as the Leader of the Opposition. The police have booked the filmmaker under the Information Technology Act and are currently investigating the matter.
The controversy ties back to promotions for Varma’s film Vyuham, released last year amidst concurrent elections for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha. The film explores events leading to the tragic 2009 helicopter crash of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and the subsequent rise of his son, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who established the YSR Congress Party. Known for his close ties with the YSR Congress, Varma has been a long-time critic of Naidu and the TDP.
This isn’t Varma’s first brush with controversy surrounding the TDP. His earlier film Lakshmi’s NTR depicted the turbulent relationship between TDP founder NT Rama Rao and his second wife, Lakshmi Parvathi, highlighting Chandrababu Naidu’s role in a political coup against NTR in 1995. Varma has also been vocal in criticizing Naidu, Lokesh, and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan, who now serves as the Deputy Chief Minister.
The case comes at a politically charged moment, as the coalition government of TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP has recently intensified actions against YSRCP social media activists for past derogatory comments. Notably, in December 2023, Varma himself had lodged a complaint with Andhra Pradesh police against activist Kolikapudi Sreenivas Rao for allegedly placing a ₹1 crore bounty on his head. He also accused TDP supporters of publicly offering monetary rewards for acts of violence.
Tensions escalated when Naidu, Lokesh, and Kalyan led protests outside Varma’s Hyderabad office in response to the film Vyuham. As the investigation progresses, this case adds another layer to the ongoing political drama in Andhra Pradesh.
