Delhi Court Rejects Umar Khalid’s Interim Bail Plea In 2020 Riots Case

A Delhi court has denied activist Umar Khalid interim bail in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case, observing that the reasons cited for temporary release were not “reasonable”.
Khalid had sought 15 days’ interim bail to attend his uncle’s Chehlum ceremony and care for his ailing mother, who is reportedly scheduled to undergo surgery. However, the court rejected the plea on Tuesday after hearing arguments in the matter.
The activist remains jailed under charges filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other provisions linked to the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The riots, which broke out in northeast Delhi in February 2020, left 53 people dead and hundreds injured, becoming one of the capital’s deadliest communal clashes in recent years.
The court’s decision comes shortly after the Supreme Court of India raised concerns over prolonged incarceration and delays in trials while hearing related bail matters.
Khalid has consistently denied all allegations against him, while investigating agencies maintain that he played a role in the larger conspiracy behind the violence.
