BJP Plans Gen Z-Focused Social Media Strategy, Eyes Interactive Outreach on Instagram, Snapchat and Reddit

New Delhi: In the wake of the nationwide protests over the NEET paper leak, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of its communication strategy to better connect with India’s younger generation. The party is shifting its focus from one-way messaging to two-way conversations, aiming to engage Gen Z through platforms where they are most active.
According to party sources, the BJP is exploring a stronger presence on Instagram, Snapchat and Reddit, recognising that traditional platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook are no longer as effective in reaching young audiences. The party believes that meaningful engagement requires conversations rather than simply broadcasting messages.
Senior BJP leaders reportedly feel that the events of the past month exposed a communication gap between the government and young citizens. The NEET paper leak protests highlighted that today’s youth expect accountability and transparency, and they are seeking concrete reforms rather than symbolic actions. Party leaders believe these expectations require a fresh approach to political communication.
To bridge this gap, the BJP is considering creating dedicated teams of young volunteers across districts who can communicate with their peers in a language and style that resonates with them. The idea is that young people are better positioned to explain government initiatives and party policies in formats that appeal to Gen Z.
Party leaders also pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an example of this evolving strategy. During the student protests, PM Modi shared selfie-style videos on Instagram late at night, adopting a format and timing commonly used by young social media users. Sources said he also encouraged Union ministers to become more active and interactive on Instagram to improve engagement with younger audiences.
The BJP is also reviewing the structure of its existing social media team. The party may recruit more young professionals and redesign its digital campaigns to focus on short-form videos, reels, visual content and interactive posts instead of lengthy messages and statistics.
One example discussed within the party was a recent NDA MPs’ meeting, where Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal presented India’s Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and their economic benefits. Party leaders believe such information can be simplified into Instagram Reels, infographics and creative digital content that is easier for young audiences to understand and share.
According to BJP leaders, although the NEET re-examination was conducted successfully, the government struggled to effectively communicate the steps taken to students. They believe this communication gap allowed dissatisfaction to continue even after corrective measures were announced.
Going forward, the BJP aims to establish what party leaders describe as a more “foolproof” communication system with Gen Z—one that prioritises dialogue, transparency and engagement across the digital platforms most popular with India’s youth. The strategy reflects the party’s broader effort to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving social media landscape, where opposition parties have also strengthened their online presence in recent years.
