Bengal Suspends 3 IPS Officers Over Alleged Lapses in RG Kar Rape-Murder Probe

The West Bengal government has suspended three senior IPS officers over alleged negligence and misconduct during the early investigation into the shocking RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case that shook the nation in 2024.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal along with former deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta have been suspended following allegations of mishandling the sensitive case.
According to the Chief Minister, the officers are accused of serious procedural lapses, including allegedly attempting to offer money to the victim’s parents and conducting an unauthorised press conference during the investigation. A departmental inquiry has now been launched against all three officers.
The tragic case dates back to August 9, 2024, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Initial reports and autopsy findings suggested that the young doctor had been brutally sexually assaulted and murdered while on duty.
The victim’s family had earlier alleged that they were misled by hospital authorities, who initially informed them that their daughter had died by suicide. Family members also claimed they were made to wait for hours before being allowed to see her body.
The investigation into the crime is currently being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was later convicted in the case by a Kolkata court, although he has continued to maintain that he was falsely implicated.
The RG Kar case triggered massive protests across West Bengal and the country, with doctors, students and citizens demanding justice and greater safety for women in workplaces and public institutions.
