Mumbai Court Refuses Bail to 71-Year-Old Accused in Major Land Fraud Case

A Mumbai court has denied bail to a 71-year-old man accused of playing a key role in an alleged land fraud involving forged documents and counterfeit government stamps to illegally gain control of a valuable property.
The accused, Prakash Dubey, is facing serious allegations of being part of a well-planned conspiracy to seize nearly 12,550 square metres of land through fraudulent means. Investigators claim forged legal documents, including an alleged fake irrevocable power of attorney, were used to establish unlawful authority over the property.
While seeking bail, Dubey’s legal team argued that his advanced age and health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and heart-related ailments, should be considered. They also maintained that he has no prior criminal record and that the land transactions were conducted through legitimate banking channels.
However, the court ruled that the gravity of the allegations outweighed these considerations. The judge observed that the case involves an organised and sophisticated scheme and expressed concern that granting bail could interfere with the ongoing investigation, potentially leading to evidence tampering or witness intimidation.
According to the prosecution, forged documents were created using counterfeit stamps allegedly linked to government offices. The fraud came to light after a verification exercise ordered by the Bombay High Court revealed discrepancies in the registration records and found that key documents appeared to be fabricated.
The court further noted that adequate medical treatment could be provided to Dubey while he remains in custody. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify others who may have been involved.
The case highlights growing concerns over document forgery and land-related frauds, which often involve complex networks and can impact public trust in property transactions and official records.
