Passengers Left Sweating In Dark After IndiGo Flight Loses Power Before Delhi Take-Off

Passengers aboard an IndiGo flight from Vadodara to Delhi reportedly faced a frightening and uncomfortable experience after the aircraft lost power before take-off, leaving the cabin without lights, air conditioning or ventilation for nearly 30 minutes during intense summer heat.

The incident took place on IndiGo flight 6E 657 on Sunday evening when around 160 passengers had already boarded the aircraft and were waiting for departure. According to reports, the aircraft’s ground power unit (GPU), which supplies electricity to planes parked at the airport, suddenly malfunctioned moments before take-off.

As a result, the cabin was plunged into darkness and the air-conditioning system stopped working completely. With temperatures in Vadodara touching nearly 43.6°C that day, passengers inside the aircraft reportedly struggled in the heat and humidity.

Videos shared on social media showed passengers fanning themselves using safety pamphlets while sitting inside the dark cabin. Several travellers claimed they felt suffocated and complained that they were not allowed to deboard during the disruption.

One passenger described the situation online, saying there was no electricity, ventilation or cooling inside the aircraft for almost 45 minutes, leaving people drenched in sweat and growing increasingly anxious.

Airport officials said technical teams took around 12 to 15 minutes to identify and repair the fault, while complete power restoration took roughly half an hour. Flight tracking data later showed that the aircraft eventually departed more than an hour behind schedule, taking off around 10 pm instead of the planned 8:40 pm departure time.

Responding to the incident, IndiGo confirmed that the delay was caused by a technical snag. The airline said the issue was resolved quickly and passengers were regularly informed about the situation. The company also apologised for the inconvenience and stated that passenger safety and comfort remain its top priority.

The incident has triggered criticism on social media, with many users questioning passenger comfort and emergency handling during extreme heat conditions.
