Amit Shah Dares Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to Debate SIR Controversy, Calls for Special Parliament Session

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to face the BJP in Parliament over allegations surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Accusing the Opposition of avoiding meaningful parliamentary discussions, Shah said the BJP was ready to answer every question and proposed convening a special session. His remarks came amid escalating tensions between the ruling party and the INDIA bloc over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the voter-list revision exercise.

Lucknow/New Delhi, October 31, 2026:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has intensified the political confrontation with the Opposition by openly challenging Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav to participate in a parliamentary debate on the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Addressing the Uttar Pradesh BJP State Executive Committee meeting in Lucknow on Friday, Shah said the BJP had nothing to hide and was prepared to discuss the issue in Parliament through a specially convened session.

Directly addressing the two Opposition leaders, Shah said the government was ready to respond to their allegations and questioned why they preferred protests and disruptions instead of parliamentary discussions.

“I challenge both Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav right here and now. The BJP is fully prepared to discuss this in Parliament. We have nothing to hide. Let us convene a special session of Parliament,” Shah said.

He further accused the Opposition of repeatedly disrupting parliamentary proceedings and creating unnecessary disturbances rather than allowing important national issues to be discussed. Taking a direct swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Shah alleged that the Congress leader would avoid discussing the matter inside Parliament and instead continue raising the issue through street protests.

Shah Defends BJP’s Electoral Performance

During his address, Shah also highlighted the BJP’s electoral successes across several states, including Haryana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Delhi, Puducherry and Assam, while referring to the party’s performance in West Bengal.

He argued that the Opposition was finding it difficult to accept electoral defeats and was consequently questioning the credibility of the election process.

Comparing elections to a sporting contest, Shah suggested that political parties should focus on improving their performance after losing rather than blaming the umpire. He accused Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and other INDIA bloc leaders of alleging vote theft instead of accepting the election results.

According to Shah, the Opposition’s repeated allegations about irregularities in voter lists were politically motivated. He maintained that the BJP was confident about its electoral performance and was willing to defend its position through an open discussion in Parliament.

Congress Plans Symbolic ‘Public Impeachment’ of CEC

Shah’s remarks came just ahead of the Congress’s planned symbolic proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party had initially announced a mock Parliament programme, which was subsequently renamed a “public impeachment” to highlight its dissatisfaction with the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR exercise.

The programme, originally scheduled for Friday in Delhi, was postponed approximately two hours before its commencement because of rain. It is now scheduled to take place on Saturday, ahead of the INDIA bloc’s major rally at Ramlila Ground.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to lead the symbolic proceedings and move what the party describes as an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner.

However, the proposed public event is a political demonstration and does not constitute a formal constitutional impeachment process. Earlier notices submitted by Opposition members seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s removal were rejected by the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman. The Opposition also lacks the required parliamentary numbers to secure his removal.

INDIA Bloc Continues Its Opposition to SIR

The INDIA bloc has been organising protests since early October, demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision exercise and restoration of electoral rolls as they stood before the revision.

The Opposition has raised concerns about the deletion of voters’ names and questioned whether the exercise could affect eligible citizens’ voting rights. According to the report, approximately 13 crore names, accounting for nearly 14 per cent of the pre-SIR electoral roll figures, have been deleted during the exercise.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly criticised the Election Commission, accusing it of undermining democratic principles. He has also alleged that the government was attempting to prevent protesters from reaching Delhi.

The SIR controversy has previously affected parliamentary proceedings. During the 2025 Monsoon Session, repeated disruptions over the voter-list revision exercise, particularly in Bihar, resulted in limited legislative business. The government subsequently maintained that the Election Commission was an independent constitutional body and agreed to a broader discussion on electoral reforms rather than a debate focused specifically on SIR.

During a parliamentary discussion on December 10, 2025, Rahul Gandhi had challenged Amit Shah to respond to his three press conferences concerning alleged vote theft. Shah, however, maintained that he would decide the sequence of his speech. The exchange eventually resulted in Opposition MPs walking out of the House.

UP Political Tensions Add Another Dimension

The latest exchange between Shah and the Opposition also comes against the backdrop of recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections involving 11 graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies.

The BJP won six seats, while the Samajwadi Party secured five. The results allowed the BJP to retain its previous position, while the SP also maintained three seats and gained two additional constituencies.

Reacting to the outcome, Akhilesh Yadav described it as a “double defeat” for the BJP and claimed that the results had laid the foundation for the Samajwadi Party’s victory in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Addressing the gathering in Lucknow, Shah expressed confidence in the BJP government’s position in Uttar Pradesh. Using a reference from the Ramayana, he compared the government’s strength to “Angad’s foot” and predicted that the BJP would return to power for a third consecutive term with a strong majority.

With the SIR controversy continuing to dominate political discussions, Amit Shah’s challenge has added another layer to the growing confrontation between the BJP and the INDIA bloc. While the BJP is calling for a parliamentary debate, the Opposition is preparing to intensify its campaign through symbolic proceedings and public demonstrations against the Election Commission.
