Vijay’s Wife Sangeetha Withdraws Divorce Petition, Bringing Marital Dispute to an End

Chennai: A divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has come to an end after Sangeetha formally withdrew her petition before a family court in Chengalpattu.

Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conference on Friday and informed the court about her decision to withdraw the divorce petition. She also explained the reasons behind her decision during the proceedings.

With the petition withdrawn, the court formally closed the case.

Divorce petition was filed in February

Sangeetha had filed the divorce petition in February 2026 before the family court in Chengalpattu, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay.

In her petition, she had cited irreconcilable differences between the couple as the reason for seeking divorce. She had also sought permanent alimony and requested permission to continue staying at the couple’s matrimonial residence in Neelankarai, Chennai.

However, the case did not move forward quickly and saw several adjournments over the following months.

On June 15, the proceedings were adjourned after Sangeetha indicated that she intended to withdraw the petition. She had appeared before the court through video conferencing on that occasion as well and informed the court about her decision.

The matter was subsequently scheduled for another hearing on August 7.

Several hearings were postponed

The divorce proceedings had faced repeated delays this year, with both Vijay and Sangeetha absent from some of the earlier hearings.

In the previous month, the family court deferred the matter after neither of them appeared in person. Their respective lawyers appeared before the court and informed the judges that the couple was facing difficulties in attending the proceedings physically.

Sangeetha’s latest appearance through video conference allowed her to formally communicate her decision to withdraw the case.

The court subsequently accepted the withdrawal and closed the proceedings.

Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for nearly three decades

Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for almost 27 years. The couple got married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.

They have two children. Their son was born in 2000, while their daughter was born in 2005.

For years, Vijay and Sangeetha largely kept their personal lives away from the public spotlight. However, questions about their relationship began receiving attention after Sangeetha was absent from several important public appearances involving the actor-turned-politician.

Speculation about their relationship had surfaced earlier

Rumours about differences between the couple became more prominent in 2023, after Sangeetha was reportedly absent from several significant public events involving Vijay.

Although such speculation was denied at the time, the issue resurfaced in 2025 when Sangeetha was not seen at some major events associated with Vijay’s political organisation, TVK.

The speculation intensified after Vijay formally entered Tamil Nadu politics and began building his political organisation ahead of the state elections.

Despite the public attention surrounding their relationship, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha had publicly discussed the details of their personal differences.

Sangeetha’s decision changes the course of the case

The withdrawal of the petition means that the divorce proceedings initiated earlier this year will no longer continue before the family court.

While the case had attracted considerable public attention because of Vijay’s high-profile political career, the proceedings themselves remained largely limited to the court, with the couple appearing through legal representatives or video conferencing on several occasions.

The latest development brings the legal proceedings to a close after months of adjournments and speculation surrounding the couple’s marriage.

Vijay’s political journey continues

The development comes at a significant time in Vijay’s political career. The actor, who founded the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has been increasingly active in Tamil Nadu politics.

TVK has emerged as a major political force in the state, challenging the established political order and attracting significant attention ahead of the Assembly elections.

Vijay’s transition from one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to a full-time political leader has kept him in the national spotlight. His political activities, public appearances and party programmes have continued to draw widespread attention.

The withdrawal of the divorce petition now closes a chapter that had generated considerable public interest, while Vijay’s political journey continues to remain closely watched in Tamil Nadu.
