Tukaram Mundhe’s Dinner Turns Into a Food Safety Check After He Spots Suspected Fake Paneer

Maharashtra FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe says his habit of closely observing food and hygiene standards followed him even to a dinner with friends, leading him to question the quality of paneer served at a restaurant.

For most people, a dinner with friends is simply a chance to relax, enjoy good food and spend some time together. But for Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, even a casual meal can turn into an opportunity to check whether food safety rules are actually being followed.

Mundhe recently recalled an incident from shortly after he took charge of the Maharashtra FDA. During a dinner outing with a friend, his attention quickly shifted from the menu to the restaurant’s food-safety and hygiene practices.

Speaking to NDTV Profit, Mundhe said that he has a habit of observing his surroundings wherever he goes. His new responsibility as the state’s food safety chief, he suggested, has only made that instinct stronger.

“I have this habit of wherever I go, I just look around,” Mundhe said.

During the dinner, Mundhe noticed that the restaurant’s mandatory food licence was not prominently displayed. He also began asking questions about the arrangements for drinking water at the establishment.

The situation became more interesting when his friend ordered a paneer dish.

Mundhe said he immediately had doubts about the product and even advised his friend against ordering it. According to him, the appearance of the paneer did not seem convincing.

When the dish arrived, Mundhe examined it more carefully. He questioned whether the restaurant was actually serving genuine paneer or a paneer-analogue product.

Rather than simply ignoring his concerns, Mundhe raised the issue with the restaurant.

He told his friend not to eat the paneer and questioned the establishment about several compliance issues he had noticed during the visit.

Restaurant Given Time To Correct Violations

Interestingly, Mundhe said the restaurant was not immediately subjected to punitive action. Instead, he said the establishment was given 24 hours to address the concerns.

“I again asked, is it really real paneer? As soon as it came, I just checked it. It was definitely not real paneer,” Mundhe recalled.

After the 24-hour period, Mundhe asked FDA officials to revisit the restaurant and verify whether the shortcomings had been corrected.

“After 24 hours I asked my officers to go and check. So they had 24 hours to comply with that,” he said.

The incident, according to Mundhe, eventually became an example of the way he believes food-safety enforcement should work: identify violations, give establishments an opportunity to comply where appropriate, and take action when necessary.

Maharashtra FDA Steps Up Food Safety Inspections

Mundhe took charge of the Maharashtra FDA around three months ago and has since launched an aggressive inspection drive across the state.

Restaurants, eateries, ice-cream parlours, dairies and online food-related facilities have come under scrutiny as officials step up inspections of hygiene and food-safety practices.

According to figures shared by Mundhe, FDA officials conducted more than 3,100 inspections over the past two months. During this period, around 165 food business licences were suspended, while more than 750 establishments received improvement notices.

The inspections have focused on issues such as food quality, hygiene, storage conditions, licensing requirements and other safety standards designed to protect consumers.

The scale of the campaign has made Mundhe one of the most talked-about bureaucrats in Maharashtra, with several of his enforcement actions gaining attention on social media.

Action Draws Both Attention And Criticism

While the crackdown has been welcomed by people concerned about food safety, Mundhe’s approach has also attracted criticism in some quarters.

Questions have been raised over whether suspension of licences is proportionate in every individual case and whether establishments should always face such strict action for violations.

Mundhe, however, has defended the FDA’s approach and argued that protecting public health requires authorities to act firmly whenever food safety may be compromised.

Responding to questions about whether some of the measures could be considered excessive, he rejected the criticism.

“If it doesn’t sound proportionate, I don’t know what the definition of proportion would be,” Mundhe said.

His comments reflect his broader position that food safety regulations cannot be treated casually, particularly when violations have the potential to affect large numbers of consumers.

‘It’s Not About Me’

Despite the growing public attention around his raids and inspections, Mundhe has repeatedly rejected the idea that his actions are aimed at creating a personal image or building popularity.

He said the campaign is not about him personally but about improving standards across the food sector.

“It’s not about me. It’s about food sector. It’s about food safety. It’s about food standards,” Mundhe said.

He added that the ideal outcome would actually be a situation where the FDA rarely needs to intervene because food businesses are already complying with the required standards.

Mundhe said he would be happiest if establishments followed food-safety rules on their own and the department did not have to repeatedly conduct raids or take enforcement action.

His message is straightforward: the purpose of inspections is not to target businesses for publicity, but to ensure that consumers receive safe and properly prepared food.

The dinner incident involving the suspected paneer may have started as an ordinary evening with friends, but it also highlighted something that has become central to Mundhe’s tenure as Maharashtra’s food safety chief — his tendency to keep an eye on food quality and compliance wherever he goes.
