Three Indian Seafarers Killed in Oman Tanker Strike, Families Await Return of Loved Ones

Three Indian seafarers, including a chief engineer, have been confirmed dead following a US military strike on the oil tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman, turning what began as a rescue operation into a tragedy for their families and India’s maritime community.
The Palau-flagged tanker, carrying 24 Indian crew members, came under attack after US forces alleged that the vessel was transporting Iranian oil in violation of an ongoing naval blockade. While 21 Indian crew members were rescued, three sailors who were initially reported missing have now been confirmed dead.
The deaths were first reported by the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) and later confirmed by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. Describing the incident as a “profound loss to our maritime family,” the minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of full government support.
The government has directed officials to arrange the immediate return of the rescued crew members and ensure the swift repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased so that their families can perform their final rites.
According to union representatives, communication with the vessel remained severely disrupted after the strike. The affected sailors reportedly hailed from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
The incident has also sparked a diplomatic response from India. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned a senior US diplomat in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over the attack. India condemned the strike on the commercial vessel and expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the region.
Officials said attacks on commercial shipping routes are deeply worrying and have called for immediate de-escalation to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of seafarers navigating one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
As investigations continue, families of the deceased sailors are now waiting for answers and the return of their loved ones, while the rescued crew members prepare to return home after surviving the deadly incident.
