Tarun Tejpal Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail in Sexual Assault Case, Court Examines Key Email Evidence
Goa : Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted in the 2013 sexual assault case involving a junior colleague at a luxury hotel in Goa.
The case, which began over a decade ago, came back into focus after the Bombay High Court overturned a 2021 trial court acquittal and found Tejpal guilty. During the hearing, prosecutors highlighted an email written by Tejpal to the survivor shortly after she reported the incident, calling it an important piece of evidence.
According to the prosecution, the email contained an apology in which Tejpal acknowledged a “lapse of judgment” and admitted that he had crossed a line of trust between an editor and a junior colleague. His defence, however, argued that the email referred to consensual conversations and did not amount to an admission of sexual assault.
Email became key evidence in the case
The email, sent on November 19, 2013, came after the woman complained to Tehelka’s managing editor. In it, Tejpal wrote that he had violated a relationship of trust and respect that had developed over years.
He also referred to a conversation where the woman had reminded him that he was her boss. Prosecutors argued that his response reflected an abuse of authority, while Tejpal maintained that he later withdrew those remarks.
In the email, Tejpal expressed regret and said he felt ashamed over the incident, acknowledging the power imbalance between him and the woman.
Tejpal denies wrongdoing
After his conviction, Tejpal claimed that he was being targeted due to political motives and the work carried out by Tehelka. He said he continued to have faith in the judiciary and believed further legal proceedings would prove his innocence.
The case dates back to November 2013, when the junior colleague accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator during Tehelka’s ThinkFest event in Goa.
