Man Left Stranded in No-Man’s Land as India-Bangladesh Border Dispute Ends After Identity Verified

A 55-year-old man found himself caught between two countries after a brief standoff erupted along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya over his nationality.
The man, identified as Sati Rajbanshi from Bangladesh’s Rajshahi district, was allegedly apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) after entering India illegally through the Meghalaya border. During efforts to send him back, a disagreement arose when Bangladesh’s border guards initially refused to accept him, claiming he was an Indian citizen.
The dispute led to a tense situation at the Nandirchar border area in Meghalaya’s South-West Garo Hills district, leaving the elderly man stranded in the no-man’s land between the two countries for some time.
Videos of the incident, which quickly spread on social media, showed border personnel from both sides engaged in heated discussions over the man’s identity, while the confused and distressed man stood at the center of the dispute.
Several rounds of talks between local commanders of the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reportedly failed to produce an immediate solution. However, the situation was later resolved after Bangladeshi authorities verified the man’s identity and accepted him back into Bangladesh.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges surrounding illegal migration, cross-border deportations, and the humanitarian concerns faced by individuals caught in such situations.
Authorities from both countries continue to maintain vigilance along the border amid ongoing concerns over illegal infiltration and migration.
