Inside Mark Zuckerberg’s 440-Acre Irish Castle Linked To A Chilling Murder Legend
Waterford, Ireland: Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly added a remarkable piece of Irish history to his property portfolio after purchasing Strancally Castle, a sprawling 440-acre estate in County Waterford.
The Meta CEO is believed to have bought the historic property from Michael and Giancarla Alen-Buckley in a deal reportedly valued between €20 million and €30 million.
While the castle’s Gothic architecture and picturesque setting make it look like something from a fairy tale, Strancally also carries a centuries-old reputation for a much darker reason — a local legend involving a hidden “murder hole.”
A Castle With A Dark Legend
The present-day Strancally Castle was built between 1827 and 1830 for former Tory MP John Keily. But the property sits on land associated with an older castle and a disturbing story that dates back centuries.
Writer William Howitt described the ruins in his 1847 book Homes and Haunts of the Most Eminent British Poets. According to his account, the old stronghold was said to contain a sinister device connected to the River Blackwater.
Local folklore claimed that unsuspecting visitors could be lured into the castle, restrained and lowered through an opening in the rock that led towards the river. The rushing water would then supposedly carry away both the victims and any evidence of what had happened.
However, Howitt himself appeared sceptical of the tale and suggested that the story was likely a local legend rather than established historical fact.
What Is Zuckerberg’s New Irish Estate Like?
The current Strancally Castle is a striking three-storey Gothic Revival mansion, designed by architects James and George Richard Pain.
Set high above a bend in the River Blackwater, the estate combines dramatic architecture with extensive grounds, mature woodland and sweeping lawns.
The castle reportedly contains 11 bedrooms, along with features including a marble fireplace and a cantilevered staircase. Its stone exterior, Gothic-style windows and expansive interiors give the property the atmosphere of a classic Irish country estate.
Michael Alen-Buckley, who co-founded London-based investment firm RAB Capital, purchased the property with his wife around 25 years ago. During their ownership, the family undertook efforts to preserve and restore the historic estate.
A spokesperson for the Alen-Buckley family said they were leaving their home of 25 years with fond memories and expressed happiness that Zuckerberg and his family planned to continue maintaining and enhancing the property.
A Home For Visits To Ireland
Zuckerberg and his family are expected to continue spending most of their time at their primary residence in the United States.
Strancally Castle, however, could serve as their base during visits to Ireland, where Meta has its European headquarters.
The reported purchase therefore combines luxury, privacy and a significant piece of Irish heritage — with the castle’s beautiful surroundings offering a striking contrast to the eerie legend attached to the land on which it stands.
