India Debunks Reports Of Attack On MT Liaki Freedom Near Oman, Says Crew Safe

The Indian government has firmly rejected reports claiming that the Indian-crewed tanker MT Liaki Freedom was attacked off the coast of Oman, calling the information circulating on social media “false” and “baseless.”

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, officials immediately contacted the vessel’s master after reports surfaced online alleging that the tanker had been hit and that crew members had been killed. The vessel’s captain confirmed that all crew members were safe and that no such attack had taken place.

The MEA’s Fact Check unit also issued a public warning, urging people not to believe or share unverified claims related to the vessel. The agency described the viral posts as fake news and advised users to remain cautious about misinformation spreading on social media.

The rumours gained traction amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where several recent incidents involving commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members have raised concerns about maritime security. Earlier attacks on ships operating near the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz prompted India to lodge diplomatic protests and seek stronger protection for commercial shipping routes.

While the false report has now been clarified, the episode highlights how quickly misinformation can spread during periods of geopolitical tension, especially when it involves Indian seafarers working in sensitive maritime zones.
