Cockroach Interrupts Doctor’s Dinner at Mumbai Hotel, Prompting Food Safety Complaint to FDA Chief

Mumbai, September 21, 2026: What was supposed to be a quiet dinner at a luxury hotel in Mumbai turned into an unexpected and rather unpleasant experience for cardiologist Dr Ashok Seth after he spotted a baby cockroach near his dinner table.
Seth, chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and the Fortis Healthcare Medical Council, shared a video of the insect on social media and jokingly introduced it as “Roachie.”
According to his post, the incident happened on Saturday night at the Romano restaurant at JW Marriott, Sahar, Mumbai. The doctor said the tiny intruder appeared to be interested in joining his dinner but refused to leave despite attempts to move it away.
“Roachie” apparently did not make the most welcome dinner companion. Seth joked that perhaps the cockroach was looking for pizza instead of pasta, but said the unexpected visitor ultimately took away his appetite.
He and his companions eventually decided to leave the restaurant.
Doctor tags Maharashtra FDA chief
Seth also tagged Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, along with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and JW Marriott, drawing attention to the incident amid the state’s ongoing food-safety enforcement drive.
In his social media post, Seth referred to Maharashtra as Mundhe’s “territory” and said he expected the FDA chief would look into the matter.
The post quickly brought attention to the hygiene issue at the high-end establishment. As of the report, however, there had been no response from the hotel regarding the incident.
Incident comes amid Maharashtra’s food-safety crackdown
The complaint comes at a time when Maharashtra’s FDA has stepped up inspections of restaurants, hotels, food manufacturers, street-food businesses and large food chains.
Since taking charge as Maharashtra FDA commissioner in May, Tukaram Mundhe has led an enforcement campaign involving thousands of inspections and raids across the state.
According to the report, FDA teams have conducted more than 3,000 inspections and raids, covering a wide range of food establishments.
Several well-known restaurant and food chains have faced regulatory action during the campaign. The FDA has suspended licences of some outlets after inspections found alleged food-safety and hygiene violations.
Action against restaurants and food chains
The enforcement drive has included outlets operated by major brands such as Domino’s, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, KFC, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks and Monginis.
The FDA has also inspected several well-known establishments in Mumbai.
Among them was Cafe Mondegar in Colaba, whose licence was suspended following an inspection that reportedly found problems involving food-temperature control, thawing and cooling practices, drainage and sanitation of equipment.
Another Colaba establishment, Olympia Coffee House, also faced action after FDA officials reportedly identified hygiene-related concerns, including the presence of insects and problems involving a food-storage area.
Food operations connected with institutions such as the Cricket Club of India, Mumbai Cricket Association, ISKCON’s Govinda’s and IRCTC base kitchens have also come under inspection.
FDA focus extends beyond restaurants
The enforcement campaign has not been limited to restaurants and hotels.
FDA teams have also taken action against alleged food adulteration and unsafe food-production practices. Food operations at different institutional locations have been inspected as part of the wider food-safety drive.
Mundhe has previously said that the purpose of enforcement is not simply to shut down businesses. His stated approach has also included balancing food safety with the livelihoods of people working in the food sector.
The FDA has supported measures such as designated areas and improved hygiene standards for street-food vendors as part of efforts to make food businesses safer.
What happens next?
For now, the incident at JW Marriott remains based on Dr Ashok Seth’s account and video shared on social media. The hotel had not publicly responded at the time of the report.
The episode has nevertheless drawn attention because it comes amid heightened scrutiny of food hygiene across Mumbai and Maharashtra.
For diners, the incident is a reminder that food-safety concerns can arise even at high-end establishments, where customers generally expect strict hygiene standards. Whether the FDA takes any formal action following the complaint will depend on any inspection or inquiry that may follow.
