CBI Court Sentences Chhota Rajan to Seven Years in Jail for Obtaining Passport Using Fake Documents

Chennai, July 30, 2026: A CBI court in Chennai has sentenced gangster Chhota Rajan to seven years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹55,000 for fraudulently obtaining an Indian passport using forged documents and a false identity. Rajan is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi, where he is already serving a life sentence in another case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case against Chhota Rajan, also known as Vijay Kadam, Rajendra and Nana, on March 19, 2002. The case alleged that he had applied for and obtained an Indian passport by submitting forged documents, thereby deceiving the Regional Passport Office in Chennai.
During the investigation, the CBI found that Rajan had applied for a passport under the name Vijay Kadam. To support his application, he allegedly submitted forged documents, including a school transfer certificate, ration card and other papers. These documents were reportedly used to conceal his actual identity and misrepresent his age and residential details.
The investigation further revealed that the person using the identity of Vijay Kadam was actually Rajendra alias Nana, popularly known as Chhota Rajan, son of Sadashiv and a resident of Mumbai. He allegedly impersonated Vijay Kadam and fraudulently obtained the passport by presenting forged age and residence certificates as genuine.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Rajan on January 22, 2004. Following the trial, the court found him guilty of the offences and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹55,000.
The verdict marks the conclusion of a long-running case concerning the fraudulent acquisition of an Indian passport through the use of forged documents and a false identity.
