Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully brought back a financial fraud accused from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India following an international coordination effort. The accused, Avinash Arjun Rathod, was wanted by Pune police in connection with an alleged multi-crore investment fraud case.
Rathod, against whom an Interpol Red Corner Notice had been issued, was deported from the UAE and brought to Mumbai on Thursday. After his arrival, he was handed over to Maharashtra police officials for further legal proceedings.
According to CBI officials, Rathod was allegedly involved in a large-scale investment scam where investors were attracted through promises of guaranteed fixed monthly returns from various schemes. The accused, along with other alleged associates, reportedly collected money from investors and later diverted the funds through multiple bank accounts and demat accounts.
The CBI, which acts as India’s nodal agency for Interpol-related matters, coordinated the deportation process after confirming Rathod’s presence in the UAE. The operation was carried out with support from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Officials said that international cooperation through Interpol channels has helped India bring back more than 170 wanted criminals from different countries in recent years.
The CBI’s latest action highlights the agency’s continued efforts to track down economic offenders who attempt to escape legal action by moving abroad.
