Allahabad High Court Orders Case Against Rahul Gandhi In Dual Citizenship Case

In a development that has once again stirred political debate, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed authorities to investigate allegations surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship status. The court said the claims of dual citizenship deserve a proper inquiry, either by the Uttar Pradesh government or through a central agency.

The case stems from a petition filed by S. Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who challenged an earlier decision by a special MP/MLA court in Lucknow. That court had dismissed his request to register an FIR against the Congress leader, stating it did not have the authority to rule on matters related to citizenship.

Unconvinced, the petitioner approached the high court, claiming he possesses documents and email exchanges allegedly linked to the British government that suggest Rahul Gandhi may hold British citizenship. If proven, he argues, it could make Gandhi ineligible to contest elections or serve as a Member of Parliament.

The petition also cites provisions under several laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Official Secrets Act, the Foreigners Act, and the Passport Act, seeking a detailed investigation into the matter.

This legal battle has been ongoing for months. The complaint was initially filed in Rae Bareli before being transferred to Lucknow by the high court in December 2025. After the lower court dismissed the plea in January, the petitioner escalated the matter once again.

With the high court now calling for a probe, the issue is likely to remain in the spotlight, adding another layer to the already charged political environment.
