Sanjay Raut: The Voice, Strategist and Firebrand Face of Shiv Sena (UBT)

Mumbai , June 18 : Sanjay Raut is one of the most recognized and outspoken faces in Maharashtra politics today. A senior leader of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Raut has built a reputation as a fearless politician, sharp strategist, and strong communicator who rarely stays away from political controversies.

For over two decades, Raut has represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, making him one of the longest-serving parliamentarians from the state. But his influence goes far beyond Parliament. In Maharashtra’s political circles, he is often seen as the public voice of the Thackeray family and one of the most trusted lieutenants of Uddhav Thackeray.

Born into a politically active family, Raut’s journey began not in politics, but in journalism. In 1980, he started his career as a reporter with Marmik, the publication founded by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. It was here that he learned the art of political writing and public communication. Later, while working for Lokprabha, he gained attention for his investigative reports, especially on Mumbai’s underworld, which gave him a strong identity in journalism.

His life took a major turn in 1991 when Bal Thackeray personally chose him to lead Saamana, Shiv Sena’s powerful Marathi newspaper. This decision not only elevated his political importance but also brought him closer to the Thackeray family, a relationship that has remained central to his political career. Today, as Executive Editor of Saamana, Raut continues to shape political narratives through bold editorials and sharp criticism of opponents.

Known for his aggressive style and blunt remarks, Raut has often dominated headlines. Whether speaking in Parliament, addressing the media, or writing in Saamana, he is known for speaking directly and without hesitation. His statements often set the tone for Shiv Sena’s political messaging.

One of his biggest political achievements came in 2019, when Maharashtra witnessed a dramatic shift in power. After Shiv Sena broke ties with its longtime ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Raut played a key role in building the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. He worked closely with Sharad Pawar and Congress leaders to bring together three ideologically different parties — Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress — a move many thought impossible.

This political strategy not only brought Uddhav Thackeray to power as Chief Minister but also proved Raut’s importance as a behind-the-scenes negotiator. Many credit him for turning one of Maharashtra’s biggest political crises into an opportunity.

At the same time, Raut has remained a controversial figure. His strong political attacks and allegations often spark fierce debates. Most recently, he stirred a fresh storm by alleging that MPs in Maharashtra were being offered money and chartered flights to switch loyalties to Eknath Shinde’s faction under an operation he called “Operation Tiger.”

Supporters see him as a fearless fighter who protects his party’s ideology and leadership. Critics, however, view him as provocative and overly aggressive. Yet, whether loved or criticized, few can deny his influence.

Today, Sanjay Raut remains more than just a politician. He is a journalist-turned-strategist, a powerful communicator, and one of the most polarising but impactful leaders in Maharashtra politics — someone whose words can often shake the political landscape of the state
