Samrat Choudhary Named Bihar Chief Minister After Nitish Kumar Resigns

In a major political development in Bihar, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samrat Choudhary has been chosen as the state’s new Chief Minister.

The decision was finalised during a BJP legislature party meeting on Tuesday, where party MLAs unanimously elected Choudhary as their leader. The move comes just hours after longtime Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepped down from the post.

Nitish Kumar, who has led Bihar for most of the last two decades, recently secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha and is expected to shift his focus to national politics in New Delhi.

At 57, Samrat Choudhary is set to make history as the first BJP leader to become Chief Minister of Bihar. Until now, the BJP had been part of the ruling alliance but the chief minister’s position had always been held by Nitish Kumar, leader of the Janata Dal (United).

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was appointed as the central observer for the meeting by the BJP parliamentary board, confirmed that Choudhary was unanimously chosen as the legislature party leader.

The BJP currently holds 89 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, making it the largest party in the House. Choudhary is also expected to receive the backing of around 85 MLAs from JD(U), ensuring a comfortable majority for the ruling alliance.

Choudhary represents the Tarapur Assembly constituency, where he secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections with a margin of more than 45,000 votes.

He first rose to prominence as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister in January 2024, when Nitish Kumar broke ties with the Mahagathbandhan alliance and returned to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Following the alliance’s sweeping victory in the November 2025 state elections, Choudhary was entrusted with the Home Ministry, marking the first time Nitish Kumar handed over such a key portfolio within the alliance.

With his elevation as Chief Minister, the BJP has now secured the top post in Bihar for the first time in the state’s political history.
