Railways To Begin Special Ticket Checking Drive From October 1: What Passengers Need To Carry

New Delhi: Passengers travelling by train may face more intensive ticket checks from October 1, as Central Railway is set to launch a month-long special drive covering stations and local trains across its network.

The checking campaign will continue until October 31 and will focus not only on passengers travelling without tickets, but also on those using concession fares, specified reservation quotas and railway passes.

Group bookings will also come under scrutiny.

Central Railway has appealed to passengers to carry valid tickets and the required original documents and to cooperate with ticket-checking staff during the drive.

What Is The October 1-31 Ticket Checking Drive?

The special campaign is being organised by Central Railway to detect unauthorised travel and verify whether passengers are genuinely eligible for concessions, reservation quotas and other special travel facilities.

Unreserved tickets will also be checked more closely. Ticket-checking staff can use the TTE App, where required, to verify the authenticity of tickets.

The drive will cover railway stations as well as local train services.

Which Documents Should Passengers Carry?

Passengers travelling on concession tickets or under specified reservation quotas should carry the original identity document required to establish their eligibility.

Documents accepted under Indian Railways rules include:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • Driving licence
  • Voter photo identity card
  • Photo identity card issued by the Central or State Government
  • Photo student identity card issued by a recognised school or college
  • Nationalised bank passbook carrying a photograph
  • Bank-issued credit card with a laminated photograph

Passengers should preferably carry the original document rather than depending only on a photocopy or a photograph stored on their phone.

Why Is Original ID Important For Concession And Quota Tickets?

Ticket-checking officials may ask passengers to show the original document required to prove that they are eligible for a particular concession or reservation quota.

If a passenger cannot establish their eligibility, action may be taken under the applicable railway rules.

This makes it particularly important for passengers using special fares or quotas to check their documentation before boarding the train.

What If Several People Are Travelling On One Ticket?

Group bookings will also be checked during the campaign.

According to Central Railway CPRO Dr Swapnil Nila, when multiple passengers are included on a single booking, at least one passenger named on the ticket should carry the prescribed original identity proof.

If the required original document is not produced, passengers travelling on that ticket could be treated as travelling without a valid ticket, subject to the applicable railway rules.

What About E-Pass And PTO Passengers?

Passengers travelling with an E-Pass or Privilege Ticket Order (PTO) will also need to comply with document-verification requirements.

They should carry the prescribed original identity proof and ensure that the E-Pass or PTO has been properly exchanged or converted into the required Authority To Travel before starting their journey.

Failure to complete the required process or produce the necessary documents could result in the passenger being treated as travelling without valid authority.

What Is The Penalty For Travelling Without A Valid Ticket?

Passengers travelling without a valid ticket or authorised travel document could face a financial penalty.

The minimum excess charge for ticketless or unauthorised travel was increased from Rs 250 to Rs 500, effective June 20, 2026, following changes under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026.

With the special checking drive beginning October 1, passengers using concessions, quotas, passes or group bookings should make sure they have the correct ticket and original documents before starting their journey.
