Prajwal Revanna Found With Mobile Phone During Bengaluru Prison Raid
Bengaluru: A mobile phone was allegedly found in the possession of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna during a surprise raid at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, raising fresh questions about security and the presence of prohibited items inside the facility.
The raid was carried out by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Tuesday and covered high-profile inmates, according to DGP Prison and Correctional Services Alok Kumar. The operation continued for around four to five hours, during which an Android mobile phone was reportedly recovered from Revanna.
“An Android phone has been seized from Prajwal Revanna’s possession,” Kumar said while sharing details of the operation. Another inmate, identified as Prathap Rai, was also found with a mobile phone during the search.
Following the discovery, prison authorities have begun a detailed investigation to determine how the devices entered the high-security prison and whether anyone inside the facility helped inmates obtain or retain them. CCTV footage from the prison is also being examined as part of the inquiry.
The authorities have already taken disciplinary action. The Assistant Superintendent concerned has been suspended based on a report submitted by the DIG South, while a show-cause notice has been issued to the Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison.
Officials said that no other prohibited or contraband items were recovered during the raid. The CCB has also filed a complaint with the Parappana Agrahara Police Station, and an FIR is in the process of being registered.
Revanna, the son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction in a rape case. In August 2025, a Special Court for People’s Representatives convicted him of raping a house-help at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura in Karnataka’s Hassan district.
The court sentenced Revanna to life imprisonment and imposed a ₹10 lakh fine. Of this amount, ₹7 lakh was ordered to be paid as compensation to the survivor.
The former JD(S) leader also continues to face three other rape cases, which are pending trial.
The latest prison incident is now under investigation, with officials expected to examine CCTV footage and other evidence before deciding on further action against those responsible. Authorities are also looking into whether prison personnel failed to follow security procedures that allowed the mobile phones to reach inmates.
