Midnight Drama At Abhishek Banerjee’s Home: Police Raid Triggers Political Storm In Kolkata

High-voltage political drama unfolded in Kolkata in the early hours of Saturday after a police team reportedly entered the residence of Abhishek Banerjee during a late-night operation linked to an alleged extortion case.

According to sources, officers from West Medinipur Police arrived at the Trinamool Congress MP’s residence around 2:30 am in search of his personal secretary, Sumit Roy, who has reportedly been named in an extortion case.

Sources claimed that the police sought permission to conduct a search, but were initially stopped by Banerjee’s security personnel. Following a brief confrontation, officers allegedly entered the premises and carried out searches.

The development quickly escalated after news of the operation reached Mamata Banerjee. Sources said the Trinamool Congress chief rushed to her nephew’s residence and confronted the police team. After a period of tense exchanges, the officers reportedly left the premises, followed by Mamata Banerjee.

Heavy deployment of police and central security personnel was seen outside the residence on Saturday morning, attracting significant political attention.

When approached by reporters, Abhishek Banerjee declined to comment on the searches, saying only that questions should be directed to the investigating agencies.

Trinamool Congress leaders have dismissed the allegations against Roy and described the action as politically motivated.

Fresh Legal Challenges For Abhishek Banerjee

The latest development comes amid mounting legal and political challenges for the Trinamool Congress leader.

The state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already summoned Banerjee to appear before investigators on June 16 in connection with an alleged hate speech case linked to the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.

Earlier this week, Banerjee was questioned for nearly six hours by CID officials regarding an investigation into alleged discrepancies in the signatures of several Trinamool Congress legislators on an important Assembly resolution.

The questioning followed directions from the Calcutta High Court, which ordered him to cooperate with investigators while granting temporary protection from coercive action.

ED Searches Former Minister Madan Mitra’s Residence

In a separate development, the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the residence of Madan Mitra in connection with the alleged municipality recruitment scam.

Investigators are reportedly examining allegations that bribes in cash and gold were accepted through intermediaries in exchange for appointments across various municipalities. Authorities are continuing their probe into the matter.
