Kerala Rains Turn Deadly: Death Toll Climbs to 15, Seven Still Missing as Rescue Efforts Continue

Relentless monsoon rains continue to batter Kerala, leaving at least 15 people dead and seven others missing in rain-related incidents across the state. Rescue teams remain on high alert as thousands of residents have been moved to relief camps amid worsening flood conditions.
After reviewing the state’s flood situation with senior officials, Chief Minister VD Satheesan confirmed that the death toll has risen significantly, with casualties reported from several districts.
According to the Chief Minister, Kottayam recorded three deaths, including two people from the Poonjar Assembly constituency and a child who tragically drowned after falling into a water tank.
Ernakulam reported two fatalities, while one death each was reported from Idukki and Muvattupuzha. Kollam recorded two deaths, Malappuram accounted for four, while Kannur and Kozhikode reported one death each.
Authorities are also searching for seven missing people. Two individuals remain untraceable in Kollam, two in Kannur, one in Malappuram, and one each in Idukki and Muvattupuzha.
The state government has intensified relief operations. As of 9 a.m. on Monday, 316 relief camps were operational across Kerala, providing shelter to 11,018 people who have been displaced by heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue on August 3 and August 6, accompanied by strong winds of 40–50 kmph in several parts of the state.
The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast on August 2 and 3, warning of rough sea conditions and wind speeds that could reach 60 kmph.
Adding to the concern, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has forecast high waves ranging between 2.7 and 3.5 metres along Kerala’s northern coastline. Coastal residents and fishing communities have been urged to remain cautious until weather conditions improve.
With heavy rains expected to persist, the state administration continues rescue, relief, and monitoring efforts while appealing to the public to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas.
