Karnataka Doctor Found Murdered at Home, 8-Year-Old Son Injured; Wife Detained as Police Probe Family Tragedy
Bengaluru: A shocking family tragedy unfolded in Karnataka’s Dharwad after a 45-year-old doctor was found murdered inside his apartment, while his eight-year-old son was discovered with multiple stab injuries. Police have taken the doctor’s wife into custody for questioning as they continue to investigate the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Dr Kiran Honannavar, an anaesthesiologist at Chirayu Hospital. His wife, Dr Priyanka, an ophthalmologist, is being questioned by investigators. Their eight-year-old son, who was found injured inside the house, was rushed to a private hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
According to Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, preliminary findings suggest that no outsider entered the apartment, as the residential complex has tight security. Investigators believe only three people—the husband, wife and their son—were inside the house when the incident occurred.
The case came to light after Dr Kiran’s relatives repeatedly tried to contact him throughout the day. Police said the family was allegedly informed by Dr Priyanka that he was resting and later told that he had stepped out. However, when he remained unreachable until evening, concerned relatives went to the apartment and made the horrifying discovery.
Dr Kiran was found lying in a pool of blood inside one room, while the couple’s injured son was found in another. Police said the child was still alive when officers reached the scene and was immediately shifted to hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators are still trying to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the doctor’s death and the child’s injuries.
Police said Dr Priyanka is currently in a state of shock and has been making inconsistent and unusual statements during questioning. Officers are verifying her account of the incident while also speaking to members of both families to understand whether there were any domestic issues or other possible motives.
Authorities said there is no evidence so far of any dispute with neighbours or signs of forced entry. CCTV footage from the apartment complex is being examined, along with other technical and forensic evidence, to reconstruct what happened.
A case has been registered at the Suburban Police Station, and officials said the post-mortem report, forensic findings and further investigation will help determine the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While some relatives have alleged that Dr Priyanka was responsible for the murder, police have not confirmed her involvement. Investigators stressed that the case remains under investigation and no conclusions have been drawn at this stage.
Police also said they have not officially confirmed reports regarding the child’s alleged mental health condition, adding that all aspects of the case are being examined before any conclusions are reached.
