Iran Tells UN US Is ‘Aggressor, Not Victim’, Accuses Washington of Violating UN Charter
Tehran: Iran has strongly criticised the United States at the United Nations, accusing Washington of violating international law and breaching the UN Charter through military actions carried out alongside Israel. The remarks were made by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council.
In the letter, Iravani rejected US allegations that Yemen’s Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) acts under Iran’s direction. He described the claim as “baseless” and said the group makes its own decisions based on what it considers to be the interests of the Yemeni people. According to the envoy, attempts to portray the Houthis as acting on behalf of Iran are politically motivated and unsupported by evidence.
The Iranian diplomat also dismissed Washington’s claim that it remains committed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He alleged that the US failed to honour its obligations almost immediately after signing the agreement and has continued to undermine its implementation. Iravani claimed Iran has documented 42 alleged violations of the MoU by the United States.
Reiterating Tehran’s position, Iravani stated that the United States is “the aggressor, not the victim,” accusing Washington of launching two military campaigns alongside Israel without prior provocation. He argued that these actions amount to serious violations of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use or threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country.
The diplomatic exchange comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military developments.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it carried out the fifth phase of Operation Nasr 2, targeting what it described as military infrastructure at the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain. The IRGC said the operation struck command centres, warehouses, fuel storage facilities and military equipment.
The force also warned that oil and gas export routes used by US allies could become targets if restrictions on Iranian exports continue. In a statement, the IRGC said, “The region’s oil and gas exports are either for everyone or for no one,” signalling that further escalation could affect global energy supplies.
On the other hand, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces conducted another round of precision strikes against Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz and along Iran’s coastline.
According to CENTCOM, the seven-hour operation targeted missile and drone launch sites, naval assets and coastal defence systems to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels. The US military also said it had resumed a naval blockade on vessels travelling to and from Iranian ports, adding that its forces remain prepared to carry out further operations if directed.
The exchange of accusations reflects the rapidly escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, with both sides defending their actions while raising concerns about regional stability, maritime security and the potential impact on global energy markets.
