Instagram Friendship Turns Into Nightmare: Ujjain Man Arrested After Mumbai Woman Alleges Rape On Promise Of Marriage

A 28-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district has been arrested after a 20-year-old woman from Mumbai accused him of rape under the pretext of marriage. The case has once again highlighted the growing concerns around relationships formed through social media platforms and the risks associated with online trust.
According to police officials, the woman, a resident of Mumbai’s Dadar area, had recently come in contact with the accused, identified as Vikas Sharma, through Instagram. What reportedly started as casual online conversations soon turned into frequent communication between the two. During their interactions, the accused allegedly expressed his desire to marry her, which led the woman to trust him.
Police said the woman travelled from Mumbai to Badnagar in Ujjain district to meet Vikas after he allegedly assured her about their future together. However, after arriving there, she accused him of sexually assaulting her on the promise of marriage.
The woman later approached Badnagar police station and lodged a complaint during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Acting swiftly on the complaint, police registered a case against the accused and arrested him soon after.
Investigating officer Ashok Patidar stated that the accused was produced before a First Class Judicial Magistrate following his arrest and was subsequently sent to judicial custody. Preliminary investigation revealed that Vikas Sharma reportedly worked with a band and frequently visited Badnagar for professional assignments.
Police officials also mentioned that the accused does not have any previous criminal record on file. Authorities are continuing the investigation and examining all aspects of the case, including the communication exchanged between the two on social media.
The incident has once again sparked conversations about online relationships, safety, and the emotional manipulation that can occur through digital platforms. Experts often advise individuals to exercise caution while forming personal relationships online, especially when interactions quickly progress toward promises involving marriage or long-term commitment.
The matter remains under investigation, and further legal proceedings will follow based on evidence collected by the police.
