IMD Website Crash During Mumbai Rains Leaves Residents Struggling For Critical Weather Updates
Mumbai : As heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai, many residents found themselves unable to access crucial weather updates after the official website of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Mumbai reportedly went down on Friday morning.
The disruption came at a time when thousands of Mumbaikars were relying on real-time weather forecasts, rain alerts, and district-wise warnings to plan their day and stay safe amid worsening weather conditions.
Several users reported that both the IMD’s main portal and the regional weather website either failed to load or displayed error messages, creating confusion during one of the city’s heaviest rain spells this week.
The outage sparked frustration on social media, with users questioning why the weather department’s platform was inaccessible at such a crucial moment. Many pointed out that in a city like Mumbai, where monsoon conditions can change rapidly, timely weather updates are often essential for commuters, families, and emergency responders.
The technical issue came as intense rainfall triggered widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across several parts of the city. Areas including Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon, and Andheri witnessed flooding on roads, causing major inconvenience for daily commuters.
Local train services, considered Mumbai’s lifeline, were also impacted. Due to water accumulation on railway tracks, multiple suburban trains ran behind schedule by around 10 to 15 minutes, leading to overcrowding at stations during peak office hours.
According to rainfall data, the Colaba observatory recorded 15.6 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory logged 17.4 mm by Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s automatic rain gauges reported an average rainfall of 23 mm in Island City, 28 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 32 mm in the western suburbs.
The IMD had already issued rain alerts for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning residents of continued showers and possible disruptions. However, with the website outage, many citizens were left struggling to access official forecasts and nowcasts.
So far, the weather department has not issued any official statement explaining the cause of the outage or when services would be fully restored.
The incident has highlighted how critical digital weather services have become during extreme weather events, especially in a city where monsoon rains can disrupt everyday life within minutes.
