Gurgaon Woman Alleges Harassment After Late-Night Uber Ride, Raises Questions Over Passenger Safety

A Gurgaon-based corporate professional has brought attention to concerns around passenger safety after alleging harassment by an Uber driver following an early-morning ride.

Sanjana Sharma shared her experience on social media, claiming that the incident began during a 4 a.m. Uber trip when she was unable to locate her driver through the app’s calling feature. To coordinate the pickup, she shared her personal phone number with the driver.

According to Sharma, the situation quickly became uncomfortable when the driver allegedly demanded additional money beyond the fare shown on the app. She further claimed that when she refused to pay extra, the driver prevented her from leaving the vehicle immediately, leaving her feeling unsafe while travelling alone in the early hours of the morning.

The ordeal allegedly continued even after the ride ended. Sharma said the driver repeatedly called her personal number. After she blocked him, she claims he continued contacting her through other phone numbers, including those belonging to his friends.

Expressing disappointment with the company’s initial response, Sharma said she felt her concerns were not adequately addressed despite reporting the incident. She argued that ride-hailing platforms have a responsibility to ensure customer safety and take complaints of harassment seriously.

Following public attention to the matter, Uber responded to Sharma’s post and apologised for her experience. The company stated that its safety team had contacted her directly and confirmed that action had been taken against the driver.

Uber also highlighted its safety features, including the in-app Safety Line and round-the-clock support for safety-related complaints. The company noted that phone numbers are normally anonymised on the platform and advised riders to avoid sharing personal contact details with drivers whenever possible.

The incident sparked widespread reactions online, with many users expressing concern about passenger safety and sharing similar experiences. Others called for stronger accountability measures and quicker responses to complaints involving harassment and personal security.
