Ex-RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan Joins US Fed Reform Panel; Two Indian-Origin Experts Also Chosen

Washington: In a significant recognition of Indian expertise on the global stage, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan has been appointed to a key policy task force set up by the US Federal Reserve. Joining him are two other distinguished Indian-origin professionals—Harvard economist Raj Chetty and Microsoft executive Asha Sharma—who will contribute to a broad review of the US central bank’s policymaking framework.
The appointments were announced as part of an ambitious reform initiative launched by the newly appointed Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh. The initiative includes five specialised task forces that will examine different aspects of the Fed’s operations following years of elevated inflation in the United States.
Announcing the initiative, Warsh said he had brought together experts from diverse backgrounds to strengthen the institution’s decision-making process. He described the move as an effort to introduce fresh ideas, greater transparency, and improved policymaking to help the Federal Reserve better fulfil its mandate.
Raghuram Rajan to Review Federal Reserve’s Balance Sheet
Raghuram Rajan has been selected to serve on the Balance Sheet Policy Task Force, where he will work alongside Harvard economist Karen Dynan and former Federal Reserve Governor Jeremy Stein.
The panel has been tasked with examining the Federal Reserve’s current balance sheet strategy, including the costs and benefits of its massive asset holdings, their role in implementing monetary policy, and the long-term institutional implications of maintaining such a framework.
The review comes at a crucial time as the US central bank reassesses the unprecedented expansion of its balance sheet during the Covid-19 pandemic, when it purchased large quantities of government securities to support the economy. At its peak, the Fed’s balance sheet had grown to nearly $9 trillion, and policymakers are now evaluating how best to reduce it while ensuring inflation returns to its long-term target.
Five Task Forces to Shape Future US Monetary Policy
According to Chairman Kevin Warsh, the Federal Reserve has established five separate task forces that will focus on critical areas of its operations, including:
- Communication strategy
- Balance sheet policy
- Use of economic data
- Productivity and employment
- Inflation framework
Warsh said these groups are expected to help modernise the Federal Reserve’s approach to monetary policy and improve the quality of future policy decisions.
“I reached out to 15 people whom I have known and trusted, representing a diversity of views. Our objective is to bring greater transparency and new thinking into the institution,” Warsh said.
Global Recognition for Raghuram Rajan
Raghuram Rajan is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading economists. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 2013 to 2016, a period marked by major economic reforms and efforts to stabilise India’s financial system.
Before leading the RBI, Rajan served as Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has remained an influential voice on global financial stability, banking reforms, and monetary policy.
His appointment to the Federal Reserve panel highlights the growing global recognition of his expertise in macroeconomics and central banking.
Raj Chetty to Improve Economic Data Analysis
Another Indian-origin economist, Raj Chetty, has been appointed to co-lead the Federal Reserve’s Data Task Force alongside former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and University of Chicago economist Kevin Murphy.
Chetty, a professor at Harvard University, is internationally known for using large-scale administrative and real-time datasets to study economic mobility, income inequality, labour markets, and public policy.
The task force will work on improving the quality, speed, and accuracy of economic data used by the Federal Reserve when making interest rate and monetary policy decisions.
Microsoft Executive Asha Sharma to Study AI and Jobs
Asha Sharma, Executive Vice President at Microsoft and Chief Executive Officer of Xbox, has been named to the Productivity and Jobs Task Force.
She will work alongside venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Stanford economist Charles I. Jones to assess how emerging technologies—particularly artificial intelligence (AI)—are expected to influence productivity, employment, and long-term economic growth.
The panel will examine how rapid technological advancements could reshape the US economy and labour market in the coming years.
High-Profile Team of Experts
Apart from the three Indian-origin members, the Federal Reserve’s reform initiative also includes several globally recognised names such as former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Sargent, former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, and other leading academics and policymakers.
The Federal Reserve hopes the recommendations from these task forces will help strengthen its institutional framework and improve its ability to manage inflation, economic growth, and financial stability in the years ahead.
