Delhi Hotel/Restaurant Fire: Foreigners Among 21 Dead, Many Were Asleep

A devastating fire broke out in a building housing a restaurant and hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning, claiming at least 21 lives and leaving several others injured. Authorities said many of the victims were foreign nationals who were staying in the hotel, reportedly for medical treatment in India.

According to officials, the blaze started around 9:45 AM, triggering panic inside the multi-storey building. Rescue teams evacuated more than 37 people, while some trapped occupants reportedly jumped from upper floors in desperate attempts to escape the flames and thick smoke.

The fire is believed to have originated in the restaurant section of the building, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Multiple fire engines were deployed, and emergency responders worked for hours to bring the situation under control.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance for those affected. Authorities are now examining whether fire safety norms and licensing requirements were properly followed.
