BJP’s Datia Defeat Sparks Debate: Did Ignoring Narottam Mishra Cost the Party the Bypoll?
Datia, Madhya Pradesh: The BJP’s defeat in the Datia Assembly bypoll has raised questions over the party’s decision to deny a ticket to veteran leader Narottam Mishra, with political circles debating whether his presence could have changed the outcome.
The Congress candidate Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes, securing 66,757 votes compared to Tiwari’s 60,741 votes after 15 rounds of counting. The election was held on July 30.
The result has brought attention back to Mishra, who had represented Datia for three consecutive terms after winning the seat in 2008. The BJP chose Tiwari over Mishra for the bypoll, a decision that surprised many party supporters.
Following the announcement, some of Mishra’s supporters protested and blocked National Highway-44, expressing disappointment over the ticket decision. However, Mishra maintained that he respected the party’s choice and later campaigned for Tiwari, dismissing rumours of internal disputes.
A Madhya Pradesh BJP leader, however, argued that the defeat was not linked only to the candidate selection, claiming that wider factors, including voter dissatisfaction among certain communities, played a role.
The bypoll was held after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his Assembly membership following a conviction in a cheating case. Congress retained the seat by fielding Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh.
Reacting to the victory, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari called the result a sign of changing public sentiment and claimed that voters had expressed dissatisfaction with the BJP government in the state.
The Datia result has now triggered fresh discussions within political circles about candidate choices, voter trends, and the BJP’s strategy ahead of future elections.
