BJP Kerala Headquarters Attacked in Thiruvananthapuram Amid Rising Political Tensions

Thiruvananthapuram: Political tensions in Kerala escalated on Wednesday night after the BJP alleged that its state headquarters, Mararji Bhavan, in Thiruvananthapuram was attacked by unidentified persons. According to the party, stones and bottles were hurled at the building late in the evening. Police were subsequently deployed outside the office as the situation remained tense.

The incident came hours after BJP national executive committee member and former Kerala BJP president P K Krishnadas allegedly faced an attack on his vehicle in Neyyattinkara. The BJP claimed that his vehicle was targeted while he was in the area to participate in a protest programme.

BJP alleges Congress involvement

BJP national secretary K Surendran alleged that Congress workers were responsible for the attack on the party headquarters. He also claimed that Krishnadas had been targeted by Congress workers over the past few days.

The BJP has strongly condemned both incidents and said attacks on political offices and leaders cannot be justified in a democratic system. The party announced that protests would be organised across Kerala in response to the incidents.

The latest confrontation has added to the political tension already prevailing in the state. The BJP has linked the developments to a recent black-flag protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Kollam.

Congress offices also targeted

The BJP headquarters incident occurred against the backdrop of attacks reported at Congress offices in Thiruvananthapuram. The Congress alleged that its District Congress Committee office was attacked, with stones being thrown at the building and glass panes damaged.

An attempt was also reported to set fire to the Congress mandalam committee office at Anavoor in Neyyattinkara. Police began investigating the incidents, while political leaders from the Congress condemned the attacks.

The situation has resulted in allegations and counter-allegations between the BJP and Congress, with both sides accusing supporters of the rival party of violence.

Political leaders condemn violence

Kerala Congress leaders called for legal action against those responsible for attacks on party offices. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said political party offices should not be targeted and stressed that such incidents were against democratic norms. Police were expected to examine CCTV footage as part of the investigation.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan also condemned the attacks on Congress offices and said those responsible would face legal action. He said violence and attacks on political establishments do not fit with Kerala’s political culture.

Meanwhile, a BJP worker was reportedly arrested in connection with the alleged setting on fire of the Congress mandalam committee office at Anavoor. The incident was reported after a confrontation between BJP and Congress workers in Neyyattinkara.

BJP announces statewide agitation

Following the alleged attack on its headquarters and Krishnadas’ vehicle, the BJP announced a statewide protest. The party said it would continue to raise the issue and called on its workers to participate in demonstrations across Kerala.

The developments have brought renewed attention to political tensions in Thiruvananthapuram and surrounding areas. With allegations being exchanged between the two major political parties and investigations underway into the individual incidents, authorities are expected to examine available evidence and identify those responsible.

The sequence of attacks has also raised concerns over clashes between political workers and the possibility of further escalation. Both sides have publicly condemned violence against their offices and leaders while demanding police action against those responsible.

As police investigations continue, the immediate focus remains on identifying the individuals involved in the attacks and preventing further confrontations between supporters of the rival political parties.
